Baofeng UV-5R review
Baofeng has its price series placed aggressively making it very competitive in the market. Baofeng has been trending with Baofeng UV5R for some time now. The affordability factor is one good reason that you should consider investing in this device, loaded with good features and functionalities. The cast is made up of durable material making it ideal for rough use. The good looks and lightweight body is definite to get your attention. This handset is strong and sturdy and has been built keeping in mind rough usage. The device’s ergonomic design and respectable looks are one of the best features. Extremely comfortable to hold and can be operated easily. Baofeng UV5R is dominated with long battery life.
Voice transmission is loud, clear, and crisp in spite of bad weather conditions. With moderate usage, the battery even lasts up to 2 days, which is very interesting as their competitors that provide similar handsets with the same range fail to achieve the same! In fact, there are many complaints with similar devices from other brands stating that the batteries drain out excessively soon. Credit should go to Baofeng, for manufacturing a product that does not only look good but is rich in functionality too.
The USB programming cable is compatible for Baofeng UV-5R UV-3R and is most commonly purchased, with the Talkie. Two ways radio with driver cd can also enhance the experience. The Baofeng BF-S112 2 way radio speaker would also be an add-on if used with this device. However, one can still do without the use of any accessory, and mostly buyers do not prefer to incest further in accessories, which is justifiable.
- Small, just the size of an iPod
- Good frequency range
- Easy to use

- Good frequency range
- High two colors LED definition display

- Manual programing could be a lot better
- Selecting the desired channels is slow

Good value for money that has been spent makes it an excellent product. The compatibility with third party softwares makes this device even more exceptional. Good for emergency as it has the ability to cover HAM and LMS. An eponymous bunch of devices is what I would call them. Overall, Baofeng has tried to make its new Baofeng UV5R as rich as possible. While most users would not have a problem with this, fans of Baofeng will be sure to be impressed. Have all the potential qualities to make it big in the market and can be a longtime favorite!

Where to buy?
It’s difficult to get a better dual band HT and that too priced for a reasonable $62 than Baofeng UV-5R. With international settings, this radio means a whole lot more. The entire frequency range from 130- 174 MHz and from 400- 480 MHz is open to both TX and RX. You need to be careful though as Ham license only allows you to TX on 2m from 144- 148 MHz and on 440 from 420-450mhz.The radio doesn’t qualify for the FCC certification and would not transmit to the Marine VHF, MURS, FRS/GMRS, or business radio or emergency services radio frequencies that lie in these frequency ranges. Endeavour to do so will result in FCC action.
A programming cable would be of great help as the included directions are not instructive enough to program the radio with the keypad. Baofeng UV-5R 2 way radio works on a programming software which is a minimal spreadsheet program. Though there a host of free aftermarket alternatives that a customer can cling on to which range from an active Yahoo group devoted to this radio, YouTube videos, and an aftermarket programming package called CHIRP which is a better software program. The cable needs to be attached carefully, else would lead to frustration.
The stock antenna works fine if you live under a repeater. Otherwise, an aftermarket antenna is a good upgrade.
Once charged, the radio transmits and receives quite well and operates for a substantial time on rechargeable battery included with the radio.
The price of $ 62 comes in handy as it covers the set against any kind of loss or damage to the radio due to a fall into the lake or a natural calamity etc. In such an event, the radio can be easily replaced.
Another customer review of Baofeng UV-5R
The price of Baofeng UV-5R lives up to its expectations, though it’s not for a newbie as instructions are redundant when it comes to programming it. The voice prompts are still in Chinese (low battery) and the radio can become more viable if you seek help from internet user groups specifically for this radio. Having had to program the repeater offset in memory mode is not what I expected, and it was also not in the instructions. The channel had to be programmed twice, once for receiving another for sending. One needs to program the channels from a computer.
I had to spend extra money on a matching USB programming cable and had to download the programming software from one of the user groups on the internet. The recommendation prompted one to buy a genuine cable as few some customers ended up buying cheaper priced cables, which were not compatible with the USB drivers.
The voice prompts worked great, it could easily be used in the dark or one-handed without looking at it.
It has served me well as an inexpensive backup and seems sturdy though my 25 year-old Kenwood still outperforms it on 2M.
I pat myself for buying Baofeng UV-5R as a backup.
